Modern LC/MS has evolved from a problematic, uncertain technique to a dependable, very important analytical tool in today's world. First commercialized in 1979 LC/MS and more importantly LC/MS/MS is considered by many an essential tool in fields ranging from forensic to pharmaceutical applications. I have had the opportunity to be a part of several developments from the 'early days' (early 1974) to today's rapidly changing world of new ionization modes as well as inlet improvements.

This presentation will provide a brief overview of some highlights in the progression towards future approaches to LC/MS techniques. This will include DLI, APCI, Thermospray, Electrospray, Ion Spray, and nanoelectrospray. A brief digression will include excursions in CE/MS, IC/MS and SFC/MS. The trend towards 'scaling down' the size of mass spectrometer systems including bench top LC/MS systems as well as developments in miniaturization of both the 'sprayer' devices and the sample handling and chromatography employed with modern LC/MS techniques will be presented.

This historical development review will be concluded with a glimpse at current and future trends. Specific topics will include chip-based nanoelectrospray and the unique markets and applications where this technology is well suited. Finally, given the huge acceptance of LC/MS techniques in the pharmaceutical industry, a glimpse at new application areas including clinical diagnosis of disease, biomarkers, and real-time chemical reaction monitoring will be presented as new areas for the expansion of LC/MS applications. The added 'bonus' and 'challenges' of entrepreneurship and building a small business serving the scientific arena will be woven through the course of this presentation.
